Bending THE truth

We conceived and created the opening title for the new Starz Watergate series Gaslit, Starring Julie Roberts and Sean Penn. The Watergate story unfolded across long forgotten signals, antennas and picture tubes. We set out to capture the themes of the show with a wild experiment in authenticity. Shot using a vintage Montgomery Ward “Airline” Portable Television, an iPhone and a patchwork of cables and converters, not a single keyframe of animation was set in the making of the title. We also unearthed original analogue CBS News “Chyron” typefaces to create graphic information cards that live within the show.

The result is a truly analogue main title created through technology invented 50 years apart. The beautifully un-digital, twitching, living, abstractions are never-the-same-twice, creating an apt metaphor for a society determined to bend the truth.

Not a single keyframe of animation was set in the making of the title and was created by tweaking and bending the alignment knobs of a vintage tv.
